I worked for years to build my nest 
I believe it’s one of the very best 
Through the good and the bad 
Through the happy and sad 
I have cared for all those inside 
But recently I have only cried 

My daughter is gone a soaring 
She finds my company boring 
She slams the door often as she departs No thought of how that leaves my heart An empty nest echos all things said 
They bounce about loudly in my head 

I lost one son 
He was my only one 
My grandchildren live farther away 
Much less often are they part of my day Oh yes 
Truly an empty nest 

Hubby simply does not understand 
His head marches to a non-nest band 
Our marriage is out of time 
His rhythm different from mine 
The darkness is hard to explain 
People think I should not complain 

Ever notice others do not understand 
They expect us to act as if all is grand Well it’s not! 
Simmer that in your pot! 
It’s never the best 
To adjust to an empty nest!
